What this test measures

This is a spatial span task. A sequence of tiles flashes on a three by three grid and you reproduce it in the same order. Each successful round adds one step, so the test finds the exact point where your working memory stops holding the pattern. Your score is the longest sequence you reproduced correctly.

It is closely related to the Corsi block-tapping test used in cognitive assessment, which reports a typical adult span of around five to seven items. Scores here usually run higher because the grid is fixed, the flashes are evenly timed, and people naturally chunk the sequence into shapes and paths rather than memorising nine independent positions.

How to improve your score

  • Convert the sequence into a shape, not a list. Nine positions remembered individually will stall around seven. The same nine remembered as a path across the grid, like an L then a diagonal, will go considerably further.
  • Say the positions to yourself during playback. Adding a verbal channel to a visual task gives you two independent traces of the same information. Most people gain two or three levels from this alone.
  • Watch the whole grid at once rather than tracking each flash. Following each tile with your eyes wastes time between flashes. A soft fixation on the centre lets peripheral vision catch every tile.
  • Do not start reproducing until playback has finished. Beginning early splits your attention between recall and encoding, and the last item is the one most often lost.
  • Take the test rested. Working memory span is one of the most sleep-sensitive cognitive measures. A tired run can be two to three levels below your rested ceiling.

What is a good score on the sequence memory test?

Around 9 is average. Reaching 12 puts you in roughly the top 15%, and anything above 16 is exceptional. Very high scores nearly always involve deliberate chunking strategies rather than raw memory.

How many items can working memory hold?

The classic figure is seven plus or minus two, though more recent work suggests four chunks is closer to the true limit for unrehearsed material. Scores above that reflect grouping items into larger chunks, not a larger raw capacity.

Can I train my working memory?

You will get better at this specific task quickly, mostly by developing strategy. Whether that improvement transfers to unrelated cognitive tasks is genuinely disputed in the research literature, and the evidence for broad transfer is weak.

Why do I fail on the last item so often?

Recency effects cut both ways. The final item has had the least time to consolidate, and if you begin reproducing the sequence before playback finishes, that item gets overwritten by your own actions.

Does this measure intelligence?

Working memory span correlates with fluid intelligence measures, but the correlation is moderate and a single run of a browser test is not a psychometric instrument. Treat the score as a benchmark, not an assessment.
